Get hooked during National Fishing Week

Events planned coast to coast

By Rob Sexton

It’s that time of year again when the whole country is officially invited to pick up a rod and go angling! National Fishing Week kicks off on Saturday, July 4th with family-friendly events planned across the nation. With the stated purpose of encouraging Canadians “to get outdoors and enjoy our angling heritage,” National Fishing Week runs until Sunday, July 12.

This year, there are licence-free fishing days in every province and territory, so those new to angling can give it a try without committing to a full licence. It’s a risk-free trial period for young people, urban residents, new Canadians, tourists or anglers who once fished a chance to return to the sport.

However, it’s important to note that during these licence-free periods, all other regulations apply and will be enforced, including size limits and sanctuaries. That means anglers still need to consult localregulations, which vary considerably across the country. For example, Ontario anglers without a licence must abide the reduced catch limits of a Conservation fishing license.

The Week is endorsed and supported by the Sportfishing Industry Association, Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation, and a number of provincial conservation, hunting and angling groups, including the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

“Fishing gives families the chance to reconnect with nature and spend quality time together,” says Angelo Lombardo, OFAH Executive Director. “We want to encourage everyone to go fishing during Ontario Family Fishing Week to experience a fun activity that will provide them with a lifetime of memories.”
