1. There’s lots to choose from!

Did you know there are over 400,000 lakes, rivers and streams in Ontario? That’s a lot of fishing real-estate! Ontario hosts access to four of North America’s Great Lakes as well as the world’s largest number of lakeside resorts and lodges. From fly-fishing to wrangling walleye, there are a multitude of exciting fishing opportunities in Ontario. It’s easy as a click of the mouse to plan your next adventure, either close to home or in a place you’ve never been.

2. There are handy tools like this one!

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (that department of the government you get your Outdoors Card and Fishing Licence from) has made it really easy for all anglers to find a place to fish. Their Fish ON-Line tool helps you plan a fishing trip, check fishing rules, and – most importantly – catch and identify Ontario fish.

3. It’s FREE!

There are lots of ways to try fishing in Ontario without breaking the bank!

Twice a year, Canadian residents can fish licence-free in Ontario: Family Fishing Weekend in February and Family Fishing Week in July.

Anglers who might not have the tools they need can take advantage of theOntario Federation of Anglers and Hunters’ TackleShare Program, which loans gear to the public from over 140 loaner sites throughout Ontario, and brings fishing gear to a variety of events in different locations during the summer.

If you’re new to fishing, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry makes it easy to learn how to cast a line and set a hook. Their free Learn to Fish Program is offered four to six times a week at various Provincial Parks throughout Ontario.
